Tiftarea notches first win, Holds on for 39-28 victory

Tiftarea would look to improve on a tough year last season, hoping for more than a 1-9 year. Branch and his merry band fired lots of big guns offensely, but struggled on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary. Senior QB Rob Flick would lead Tiftarea down the field with his strong arm, connecting early on with four passes and a Ethan Mims TD from 7-yards out. Remember the Mims name, you will see it again shortly.  Terrell would drive and try to answer, but a turnover in the red zone ended the drive. TA would go three and out , being conservative backed up to their own end zone. Thomas Spurlin, who nail punts all night, reset Terrell on the 50.  The Terrell drive would stall, and with a good punt return, the Panthers found new offensive life. Flick would  find Mims again, scampering in for TD number two. Mims amassed at least 75 yards after catches. He totaled 68 yards rushing and a TD, and caught 6 balls, three of which went for TDs.

Flick and the offense would ring up 397 yards of total offense, 239 of that through the air. Flick threw for five TDs.  Defensively, TA had several bright spots. Spurlin and Joseph Spinks headed a head hunter style defense, playing a lot of 4-4 and dime coverage. If there was one spot where there are some holes to fill, it lies within the secondary. They gave up two long bomb TDs and had several missed coverages throughout the night. These things will come with time, and remember the Panthers didn’t get to scrimmage much with Valwood.

Tiftarea moves to 1-0 on the young season, and will travel to Sherwood Christian (0-1) in Albany next Friday night. Game time is 7:30 PM.
