Hoops: Worth falls to Lowndes

Sylvester – Still growing, Coach Popham knew he had a rough road ahead with the AAAAAA Lowndes Vikettes against his young squad. His Lady Rams hosted Lowndes as the home opener of  the season. The Vikettes would be without a key player who suffered a ACL injury and is likely out for most of the season. It would not affect the outcome of the game as Lowndes swarmed over the Lady Rams  67- 39.

“We knew scheduling big teams, hard opponents was going to be tough in the beginning. But we’re learning, and I’m already seeing where we’re growing.” Popham said after the contest. Lowndes would make a 15-9 run in the first frame, and Worth just never caught up. Lowndes would expand that lead, adding another 17 points to their tally to lead 32-17 at the break. The heavy lifting for Lowndes was done by Zakiya Hunter, a Senior Forward. Hunter had 10 of her 15 points in the first half. For Worth, Tykeria Tensley, a senior shooting guard, helped to slow the tide with two big three-pointers in the second period.

After the break, Taffany Smith would take control. The Lowndes Junior guard hit two from long distance, tallying 12 points in the third quarter as Lowndes went on a 21-9 run.

Smith would lead all scorers with 22 points, Hunter would finish with 15, Faith Starling added 10, and Jamesha Samuel and Akasha Williams each finished with 7 points. For Worth, Tinsley finished with 21, and DeAundra Smith added 11 points in the losing effort.

Popham was proud of his post play. “Lindsey (Tonegay) had four steals as a center, and did well in the paint.” Turnovers were still an issue for his young squad, but Popham was pleased that few of these were unforced. Worth falls to 0-1 and will have a week off until facing Warner Robins next Saturday night. Coach Tom Mobley brings his Demonettes to town in his season opener. Game Time will be 6PM.

Lowndes moves to 1-0 on the young season, and welcomes Crisp County on Tuesday. Game Time is 6 PM in Valdosta.
