Tift Boys Roll 82-47

Thomasville – The defending AAAAAA State Champion Tift County Blue Devils took to the hardwood for the first game of the season against a physical, scrappy Thomasville Bulldog club. Eric Holland and his Tift squad wanted to make a statement. That statement ran to a 82-47 final as Tift swept in the nightcap.

Outscoring the Bulldogs as Tift worked up tempo, quick plays, and pushed for fast break opportunities. At the end of One, Tift went on a 22-11 run, and began to pull away. The heavy lifting was done by Sophomore Preston (PJ) Horne. He accounted for  8 of the 22.

Tift would push but be consistent offensively, outscoring Thomasville 21-15 in the second period to lead 43-26 at the break. Tyrie Jackson owned the quarter, scoring 6 points and dishing to set up Horne who added 8 to his tally during the second frame.

Jackson would dial long distance in the 3rd period, hitting twice from well behind the line to at 10 points. Holland sat him after Jackson got in foul trouble.

Thomasville never got close, trailing 66-40 at the start of the final period. They slowed the scoring as Holland played his reserves, but still found the hoop to win 82-47.

” We missed some assignments tonight, I know the score doesn’t show it, but we did.  Gotta get better at making our assignments on both sides of the ball. Always something to work on.”Holland said after the game. ” Asked to pick out a standout tonight, “All of them. Pig (Jackson) did well, scoring 21 in three periods. PJ (Horne) wasn’t at his best, and we will work on him some.  He seemed gassed in the closing minutes” While he did seem to lose energy in the 4th period, Horne finished with 20 points. Micah Johnson finished with 10.  Hayden Mullinax added 6 points. “I liked Mondo’s (Monquavious Green) energy coming off the bench tonight too. He came in and brought it to the floor with him.”

Tift moves to 1-0. Tift will face Monroe next Friday night. Game time is 8:30PM at the Tift County Arena.
