Wrestling: Tift takes to Mat

Tifton – Coach Shawn Watson has a young program at Tift, and for the first time, a new building dedicating to wrestling at TCHS. The wrestling building saw the first of many matches in the new structure on Tuesday, as the Blue Devils played host to visiting region foes Colquitt and Lee Co.

8H7A4237Tift would win both, taking a 46-30 victory in a dual format over Lee County, and a 54-18 victory over Colquitt. It should be mentioned that none of the teams had their team members from football yet, and the lineups could be different when the postseason is complete for the teams.

“We love the new room, and it’s getting there as far as where we want it to be facility-wise. We still have some things to work on.” Watson said on Tuesday. “We’re still dont have everyone back, and our lineups will change some once everybody makes weight and gets where we need them.

Outgoing TCBOE school board chair Rita Griffin was pleased with the intimacy of the space. “Fans are a lot closer to the action here. That and the small space makes fans a bigger part.” A lot of the larger tournaments, like the Fourth Annual Devin Smith Memorial Blue Devil Invitational. will still be held in the Gym, but tr-meets will be held here.

The Devils travel this weekend to Ola High School, located in Henry County, for the Ola Duals. The next home match will be Dec. 2nd. The Blue Devil Invitational is set for Dec. 6th at TCHS. Come support your Blue Devils.
