Fast Paced Tift wins Transition Game 55-42

Tifton – The Tift County Blue Devils played their first regular season home game against the Monroe Tornadoes. Tift would come in at 1-0, after dispatching Thomasville last Saturday night. Monroe opened their season with Tift tonight.  Using a big 1st quarter, Tift would defeat Monroe 55-42.

Starting fast, the Blue Devils would make a 17-6 run in the 1st frame, fueled by a quick transition game and long distance dialing by the Tift back court. Junior Tyrie Jackson would hit a 3-pointer and crash the rim for a dunk in the period, leading Tift with 7 of the 17 points. Micah Johnson would get in the act, phoning home for two 3-pointers.

Both teams would settle in for the second period, tying with 13 apiece but with Monroe unable to cut the Tift lead at the break, 30-19.

The Devils would make another small run, outscoring the Tornadoes in the 3rd period 11-7 to lead 41-26 at the start of the final frame. Monroe would answer in the 4th, but never draw close as they outscored Tift 16-14 as time ended.

Tift was led by PJ Horne, who had 17 points, all in the final 3 periods.Jackson would finish with 11, Johnson added 10 points, and Jalen Lewis would finish with 9 on the night. For Monroe, Napoleon Lewis led with 12 points, and Keith Hayes added 7 points.

Tift is now 2-0, and will host Thomasville on Saturday night. Tipoff is 8:30PM. Monroe falls to 0-1, and will face cross-town rival Westover at Darton College on Saturday. The boys’ contest will start at approximately 8:30PM.
