Girls Hoops: Tift edges Monroe 41-36

Tifton – Coach Julie Conner had a lot to plan for on Friday night. Speaking last weekend with me, she talked about what a strong opponent Monroe’s Lady Tornadoes would bring to the Devils’ Den at Tift County Arena. Conner’s squad, entering at 1-0 after defeating Thomasville to open their season, came back down 5 at the half to win 41-36.

Fairly even through the first frame, Monroe would find a 2-point lead as the 2nd Quarter started, and would outscore Tift 11-8 in the period to lead 22-17 at the break. Monroe was
led in the half by Keshundra Price, a Senior shooting guard, who had 16 of her 21 points in the first half.

Tift used a huge defensive 4th Quarter to win. The Lady Devils went on a 9-2 run in the period, winning the game by 5. Vanity Golson, a Junior shooting guard/forward, would dominate the second half. She scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half, and none larger than a 4th quarter jumper for the victory.

Tift won despite shooting .45 percent from the charity stripe, going 9 for 20 on the evening. Golson was joined by Sky Moore, who finished with 8 points, including two 3-pointers in the 3rd frame.  Audrey McElhaney scored 6 points in the victory. For Monroe in the loss, Price led all scorers with her 21 points, and Kelsey Davis and Toddriannia Isler each had 4 points.

Tift moves to 2-0, and will host Thomasville High’s Lady Bulldogs Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:00PM.
