Girls Hoops: Tift Edges Bulldogs in Rematch 48-44

Tifton – Coming off a big win over Monroe, it might be natural to think you could let off the gas, especially against a team you’ve beaten already in the young season. Julie Conner and her Lady Devils squad entered the friendly confines of the Tift County Arena at 2-0, having beat Thomasville in the Rose city last Saturday night. The Lady Bulldogs made the trip up 319 for a rematch, and the game wasn’t decided until the final minute.

After falling to Tift on their home floor, Thomasville made themselves at home at the palace, outscoring Tift 10-8 in the first frame. In a defensive battle in the second frame, the Lady Devils would answer, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 9-8 with many of the points on both sides scored at the charity stripe. Thomasville would lead by one at the break, 18-17.

After halftime, Conner’s Lady Devils found a way to get more players involved, with five different players tallying baskets in the frame on a 15-11 run. Getting big three pointers from Dail Adaway and Joslyn Reyes, the Lady Devils also saw  Vanity Golson, Audrey McElhaney and Moneisha Goldsborough find the hoop. The third frame would be the difference.

In the 4th, Thomasville tried to shrink the lead, riding the backs of Ricarsha Johnson and Danisha Jones. The pair combined for  13 of the 15 points scored in the final frame. Defensively, it should be noted that Thomasville did not make a trip to the foul line in the 4th period. Tift attempted 12 free throws in the last period, netting 6 points.

For Tift, Golson led all scorers on the evening with 16, and got help from Goldsborough with 8 points. McElhaney and Adaway finished with 7 points each. Tift finished shooting .56% at the free throw line (20 for 36). For Thomasville,  Jones finished with 15 points, Johnson 11 points, and Zombriua Morrow added 9 points.

Tift moves to 3-0, and will face Worth County on Monday Night. Game time is 7:30PM. Thomasville falls to 0-2 and will play Monday in Jonesboro against Mt. Zion as part of the Maynard Jackson Tip-off classic. Game time for the Lady Bulldogs is 1:30PM.
