Girls Hoops: Worth takes one on Chin

Sylvester – Outmatched and out gunned. Coach John Allen Popham brought his struggling to the hardwood for a contest against a strong Warner Robins Demonette squad on Saturday night. The Demonettes opened their regular season on the road as Worth entered at 0-2. Warner Robins would score 30 in the first frame and never look back, taking a 75-20 win home.

Coach Tom Mobley got a great first game performance from Freshman shooting guard/forward Shynia Jackson. Jackson had 10 of her game-high 18 in the first period.  Worth found the basket with Lindsey Tonegay and DeAundra Smith but Warner Robins went on a 30-6 run, pressing the entire contest, even with reserves.

“They came to play, pressing, and we couldn’t handle it. We’re just really, really young.” Popham said after the contest. Warner Robins’ trademark under Tom Mobley has been aggressive, controlled presses and strong defense. The Demonettes forced several turnovers in the first frame, and recorded several steals. Popham received some other troubling news. DeAundra Smith, a freshman who has started and leads Worth in scoring, has decided to transfer to Orlando, moving to live with family in Florida.

“We’re gonna have to settle, figure out who wants to step up, and what fits here.” Tonegay, a Junior Post, and  Tykeria Tinsley, a Senior Guard, are the only team members with any real varsity experience.  Each finished the contest with 6 of the 20 points scored. Breosha Toomer, Freshman forward added  five points in the losing effort.

For the Demonettes, Jackson was joined by Kishara Howard, who finished with 12 points. Mobley emptied his bench, giving playing time to as many as he could. Others scoring included: Tesia Walker with 7 points ( all in the 1st Qtr.), Dacien Ambler with 7 points, Victoria Browin with 6 points, and a trio of Demonettes; Courtney Walker, India King, and  Aaliyah Grace, each with 5 points.

Worth will play in Tifton on Monday night, facing the 3-0 Tift County Lady Devils in the night cap. Tift defeated Thomasville 48-44 on Saturday night. Game time is 7:30PM as part of the Zaxby’s Thanksgiving shootout. Warner Robins moves to 1-0 and will face Perry in the home opener for the team on Tuesday, Nov. 25th. Game time is 6:00PM
