The Georgia Southern Eagles didn’t even play Saturday, but they were certainly winners

STATESBORO, Ga.  (WJCL)  The Georgia Southern Eagles didn’t even play Saturday, but they were certainly winners.

Longtime rival Appalachian State defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 35-16 on Saturday, dropping the Ragin’ Cajuns record to 6-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.  Lafayette and Georgia Southern were the only two undefeated teams in Sun Belt Conference play entering the weekend.  The loss by Lafayette assures Georgia Southern at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference title.  The Eagles can claim the SBC title outright with a victory over Louisiana Monroe next Saturday.

Georgia Southern (8-3, 7-0 SBC) was off this weekend.  The Eagles will host Louisiana Monroe (4-7, 3-4 SBC) on Saturday, November 29 at 6 pm.

Georgia Southern is in it’s second year of transitioning from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision to the FBS.  The Eagles are not eligible to play in a bowl game, but they are allowed to win the conference title in 2014.

Georgia Southern and Appalachian state are longtime rivals, which makes Saturday’s win by the Mountaineers over Lafayette so unique.  Back on September 25, Georgia Southern defeated Appalachian State 34-14 in a nationally televised Thursday night game at Paulson Stadium.

Appalachian State was led by Marcus Cox, who rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Tickets for Georgia Southern’s game against Louisiana Monroe are currently on sale.
