Lady Rebels Win Season Opener Over Telfair

The Turner County Lady Rebels kicked off their 2014-2015 campaign Tuesday night in Ashburn with a battle against Telfair County. The Lady Rebels return much of the team that went 24-5 last year and advanced to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class A public state tournament. But it was a struggle for the Lady Rebels against the visitors from McRae.

Both teams really struggled with turnovers and sloppy play, which is to be expected this early in the season. Telfair came in with an overall record of 1-1 and really stayed close with the favored Lady Rebels. The Lady Rebels, who are coached by Tasha Kimble, led 17-11 at the half and stretched the lead to 10 at one point in the third quarter. But the Lady Trojans kept cutting into the lead and actually trimmed the deficit to 6 in the fourth quarter.

But the Lady Rebels made enough baskets in the fourth quarter to pull away from a scrappy opponent and took the victory 40-29.

Junior Mylashia Yancey, who was the leading scorer on last years squad, led Turner County with 14 points. The Lady Rebels will be back in action Friday night as they travel to Cordele to take on the Lady Cougars. Tip off is at 6:00.
