Boys Hoops: Cook edges Berrien 52-47

Nashville – Tommy Blackshear entered the gym at Berrien High hoping for a win. His Cook Hornets squad fell to Lanier Saturday night by four, 50-46. In the road opener for the squad, Cook traveled the 12 miles to neighboring Nashville for a contest with the Berrien Rebels. The Rebels entered at 2-1, having lost to Brantley County in tourney play over the Thanksgiving break. In another close one, Cook got their first w.

Cook would get a quick jump, outscoring the Rebels in the first frame 14-10. Berrien was in the game in the first because of Justin Owens. The junior guard accounted for eight of the ten Berrien points, perfect from the charity stripe in three attempts, and hitting from 3-point land. Berrien would gain ground in the 2nd period, edging Cook narrowly 9-8 to trim the lead by one, 24-19 at the half.

The third would find the Rebels slightly flat. The Hornets racked up 15 points in the period, with Berrien netting just seven points. That lead would be enough to hold, but Berrien made a 21-15 run in the final minutes to get close.

Cook would have a double threat, as Junior Tavian Allen (6’1″ Guard) and Senior point guard Thomas Roundtree each finished with a team-high 13 points. Denziel Scott would add 12 points in the contest. Leading all scorers in the losing effort for Berrien was Owens, who finished with 18 points on the night. Lou Picolo added 11 points. Keshaude Jackson found the hoop for six points.

Cook improves to 1-1 and will travel to Americus-Sumter on Friday as the Hornets open region play in their new classification, 1-AAAA. Americus is 2-0, besting Albany for a region win by 4 on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:30PM. Berrien falls to 2-2 and will open their region play with Thomasville on Friday in Nashville. Thomasville is currently 2-2 with both losses to AAAAAA State Champion Tift County. First Tip is 7:30PM.
