Girls Hoops: Berrien falls to Cook

Nashville, GA –  Entering the rivalry game against neighboring Cook, coach Tim Hathcock knew his young club would have to play well against a good Cook Lady Hornet squad. His Rebelettes have yet to win in this early season, losing each game by single digits to Atkinson and Clinch County’s teams. Cook enjoyed a big victory over Lanier County on Saturday night, gaining their first win of the season. Tying with Echols County in tourney play, coach Clemmie Foster hoped to get win number two.

Taking advantage of some Berrien ball handling issues, Cook applied pressure throughout, scrapping every time down the floor in the first half. Berrien was able to stay close as Cook took a five point lead at the end of the first frame, 13-8. Much of scoring for both sides was transition play, but Berrien made a concerted effort to get the ball in the post as the game went on. Hathcock needed to get the ball in the hands of forwards Akhelyi Pitts and Tenese Pitts.

Cook took control in the second frame, going on a 17-8 run and expanding the lead to 30-16. Cook got offensive production from Mercedes Clowers and Lakeyda Zachary in the period. Clowers had 8 of her 16 points in the frame. Zachary added five points, primarily on the break as she forced steals and turnovers by the Berrien back court.

Down after a 15-9 3rd period, Berrien couldn’t gain any ground and would fall 57-34. Clowers led all scorers with her 16 point performance, Zachary added 10 points on the evening, and Valyen Mobely added eight points, six of which came from the charity stripe. For Berrien in the loss, Tenese Pitts led with eight points, Sharmaine White finished with six points,  Akheyli Pitts and Danielle King each would add five points.

Berrien falls to 0-3  and welcomes Thomasville for their first region contest on Friday night. Thomasville is 3-2 on the season, with both losses coming to AAAAAA Tift County. Game time is set for 6PM. Cook will travel to Americus-Sumter for Friday night for the first region contest in AAAA. Under the new GHSA classification system, Cook plays AAA football but all other sports are grouped in Region1-AAAA.  Americus defeaed Albany High before Thanksgiving in their only contest this season. Tipoff is 6:00.
