Lee Takes 1st in BDI

The Tift County Blue Devils held their 23rd annual Blue Devil Invitational, Saturday December 6. Fifteen teams showed up to compete of which, six of the schools had both a Varsity and a JV team in the tournament.

Lee County Varsity finished first in the tournament at 97.5 points with 10 placers. The Trojans had six wrestlers place first including Raymond Hunter, wrestling at 120 and Jonah Anderson, wrestling at 138. Both wrestlers pinned their finals opponents. Also placing first was Aaron Maxfield, John Cruz, Brett Butler and Collins Tensley who all defeated their opponents by decisions. Lee’s 170, Aaron Lloyd, placed second after a pin by Valdosta’s Bryant Crumtie. Lee had two placers for third including 182 wrestler Sylvester Jackson and 126 wrestler Cody Bryant. Cameron Daniel placed fourth for the Trojans.

Valdosta fell short to lee by 11 points, finishing the tournament at second with 86.5 points. The Wildcats had eight placers for the day. The 170 wrestler Bryant Crumtie and 126 wrestler Derek Smith both brought home the gold placing first. Valdosta had four second place wrestlers including Cameron Warren wrestling at 106, Quinn McGlamery at 113, Trevian Walton at 120 and Brandon Wright at 182. Mason Schmitt, 132, and Justin Sermons, 152, both defeated their opponents to win the bronze.

Tift finished the day in third as a team with 77 points and nine placers. Tift’s only first place winner was Charley Powell wrestling at 182. Powell defeated Wright from Valdosta in overtime. The Blue Devils had four second place wrestlers including 132 wrestler Quen Campbell who is ranked 7th in the state. Campbell was defeated by elite wrestler and BDI’s most outstanding wrestler, Hunter Kelley from Berrien. Also placing second was Jerry Rodriguez wrestling at 145, Rayder Schemmel at 160 and Brandon Nixon at 285. Both Jake Pratt, wrestling at 120 and David Scarborough at 195 pinned their opponents to take home the bronze. Pratt pinned his fellow teammate Dylan Musgrove in what was considered the most amusing match of the day. Will Rowland, Tift’s 113 and Brandon Hall, 126, both placed fourth for Tift.

Lowndes finished fourth as a team with 66 points and six placers over all. 152, Davis Ison and 285, Parker Metcalf, out wrestled their opponents to win the gold. Viking’s 220, Dwayne Hart was defeated by Lee’s Tensley to take home the Silver. Also winning for Lowndes were, Anthony Cillo, wrestling at 113 and Norman Davis, wrestling at 145, both defeated their matchups for third place. Alex Almond, 106, placed fourth for the Vikings.

The Cook County Hornet Classic will be held next weekend, December 12-13, at Cook High School. Come out and support your local south Georgia wrestling teams. Wrestling will begin at 9:00 AM.
