Tift Girls Edge Lee 32-25

Tifton – Lee County is a newcomer to Region 1-AAAAAA, but the Trojans have been in the region with Tift previously. Lee enjoyed a brief stint in the old AAAAA before reclassification sent the Trojan clan back to war with Thomas Co. Central and other area teams. With a mixed record at 4-4 on the year, Lee is a bit of a mystery squad, but the first region game of the year takes things to another level. After a close dogfight, Tift managed to garner some space for the 7-point victory, 32-25.

The Lady Trojans came flying out of the gate, making a 8-4 to lead by four as the quarter expired. 6 of the 8 came from Chelsea Deriso.  The Junior point guard dialed long distance twice to add the lead. Tift did not have a field goal in the period as Audrey McElhaney scored all four Tift points at the charity stripe.

In the second, Tift found the groove and turned on the defense. The Lady Devils went on a 8-2 run to lead by two at the break, 12-10. McElhaney was perfect at the line in the first half, going 6 for 6. She added a bucket as Tift pushed back.

In the third frame, the back court provided a lift again for Tift. This time Sky Moore found the hoop for 4 of the 10 scored. Sophomore shooting guard Dayana Chaney also tried her hand at dialing long distance, hitting a big 3-pointer in the period. Lee would muster 8 points and the lead for Tift would be 4, 22-18.

In the 4th, familiar faces would take control and get the w. McElhaney and Junior guard/forward Vanity Golson each scored four as time wound down. DeAmbria Abner would try to keep Lee in it with a three-pointer but the Lady trojans couldn’t shave the lead.

McElhaney would lead all scorers, finishing with 12 points. Golson and Moore each added six points to the tally, and Moniesha Goldsborough would net 4 points. For Lee, Abner was the leading scorer with eight points, and Deriso’s six helped the Lady Trojans.

With a week to gameplan and recover, Tift improves to 7-2 (1-0 in region play) before making a road trip to former region foe Coffee. Tipoff on Friday in Douglas is set for 7:00PM. Lee falls to 4-5 and will host the Terrell County Green Waves on Tuesday. Tip-off will be at 6:00 in Leesburg.
