Rebels hold off Bulldogs

Ashburn- In the nightcap of the Ronalda Pierce Holiday Hoopfest, the Turner County Rebels took on the Lanier County Bulldogs. The Rebels and Bulldogs both belong to Region 2-A but this game would not factor into the region standings.
IMG_1838The Rebels jumped out to an early 30-14 lead midway through the second quarter but a late 11-0 run by the Bulldogs trimmed that lead to 30-25 at halftime. The Rebels never really could totally pull away from the Bulldogs. In fact, the visitors from Lakeland only trailed by two midway through the fourth quarter and had possession with a chance to take the lead. But too many mistakes by the Bulldogs and some clutch shooting by the Rebels allowed them to pull away for the 64-55 victory.

“We should have put them away when we had the chance in the second quarter,” said Turner County head coach Dr. Tyrone Kellogg. “But give those guys credit. They battled back and made a game of it. We needed a game like this. Hopefully it will help us down the road.”

Once again, the double double machine of Tamarrion Terry led the way for the Rebels with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Also scoring in double figures were Shaquille Baldwin with 15 points and Quan Hillmon with 11 points.

With the victory, the Rebels advance to the finals where, just like the Lady Rebels, they will take on Americus-Sumter. The Panthers will enter with a record of 10-2. Kellogg knows it will be a heck of a challenge for his squad.

“They defeated a pretty good Coffee squad (62-49 earlier Saturday). Most of the kids were here to see it so they know what they are up against. It should be a fun game for the fans to come watch,” said Kellogg.

Tip-off is set for 8:00 at the Civic Center in Ashburn.
