Irwin Splits Against Fitzgerald

The Irwin County Indians split the wins on the road against the Fitzgerald Hurricanes. The Lady Canes put up a whopping 52 lead against the Lady Indians defeating them 78-26. The Canes couldn’t follow the ladies lead and fell to the Indians 62-45.

The Lady Canes, now with a 6-8 season, dominated the court Thursday, January 8. T’kayshza King stayed hot all night for the Fitzgerald racking up 21 points in the game. Irwin held their own in the first period putting up 10 points on the board. Shayon Bryant and Rodeshia Eady put up the only field goals for the Lady Indians. The Canes stayed strong with a two point lead at the end of the first 12-10.

The Indians couldn’t get their stride back after the first and were outscored by 19 points in the second quarter. King, Brianna Wormley and KeKe Bonner charged to the net putting up 20 of 26 points for the Canes. The Fitzgerald defense proved to be strong only allowing the Lady Indians to get to the net three times for seven points. The Canes were up 38-17 at the end of the half.

The Lady Canes continued to dominate offensive and defensively into the second half with 22 points, outscoring the Lady Indians by 20 in the third period. Alyssa Jones scored the only field goal for Irwin in the third. King racked up 11 points, three shots from the three point line. The Lady Canes led 60-19 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter continued the momentum and drive for the Lady canes, forcing their way to the rim while their defense continued to defend the Lady Indians goal. Keyana Devine, Daria Minor, Aniya Martin and Kirstin Crook all put points on the board for Fitzgerald in the fourth quarter. Eady managed to put the only seven points on the board for the Lady Indians. The Lady Canes defeated the Lady Indians 78-26. The Lady Canes are now 6-8 on the season while the Irwin County remains winless with a 0-7 record.

The Indians turned it around after a tough loss for the girls against Fitzgerald. The Indians outscored the Canes by 17, defeating them 62-45. The Canes are now 5-6 on the season and remain winless in 2015. The Indians are 6-3 with a four game win streak.

The Indians next game will be at Lanier County January 10 at 6:00PM. The Canes will also take on Early County Saturday night in Blakely game time starts at 6:00 PM.
