Fitzgerald Sweeps in Region Matchup

The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes and Berrien County Rebels faced off Tuesday night, where the Hurricanes took advantage of playing on their home court. The Lady Canes defeated the Lady Rebels 77-62 while the Hurricanes continued the action with a win against the Rebels 59-38.

The Lady Canes went into the game with a 3-2 record on region match ups but were confident in bringing home the win. Fitzgerald’s strong offense forced their way to the rim in the first frame, putting up 22 points. Keke Bonner led her team with ten points and motivated her teammates, such as Brianna Wormely who put up 5 points, to drive to the rim. Lady Rebels, Treyonna Boone and Kierra Folson attempted to answer back, both shooting for two field goals, but a strong Fitzgerald defense proved to be a force on the Berrien offense. At the end of the first the Lady Canes were up by twelve, 22-10.

The second quarter was a turning point for the Lady Rebel’s offense, putting pressure on the Lady Canes’ defense and driving to the rim. Boone and Junior, Sharmaine White both led the scoring for the Lady Rebels. Boone went 3 for 6 on free throw shots and put a field goal while White added four points on the board. The Lady Canes continued to shine on offense and outscored Berrien once again. Bonner led her team again with seven points in the second quarter. At the end of the second frame Fitzgerald was up 41-25 against Berrien.

Berrien took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Canes by a field goal. Fitzgerald allowed eight technical fouls against Berrien and the Lady Rebels took advantage of their free throws, shooting 10 out of 15 shots. Boone went 4 for 4 out the free throw line. Bonner stayed strong once again for the Lady Canes putting up three field goals and also went 4 for 4 at the free throw line. The Canes were outscored by two in the third but continued to hold the lead at 61-47.

The Lady Rebels came out strong hoping for a fourth quarter comeback but the Lady Cane defense held strong and limited the rebels to 15 points against their 16. At an attempt to come back and win, Berrien allowed six fouls, but the Lady Canes stayed strong only missing three of 17 shots at the line. They came out strong with a region win against the Lady Rebels, defeating Berrien 77-62. Bonner led the Lady Canes with 29 points in the game. Wormley also racked up 15 points for Fitzgerald. The Lady Canes are now 7-9 on the season while the Lady Rebels are 6-11.

The guy’s game was no different for the Canes, defeated the Rebels 59-38. Fitzgerald is now 6-7 on the season while Berrien struggles with a 4-13 season.

Fitzgerald’s next matchup will be on the road against the Worth County Rams, Thursday, January 15. Game time is at 6:00 PM. Berrien will also be traveling on Saturday to Thomasville in a region match up starting at 6:00 PM.
