Soccer: Tift Impressive in Scrimmage Sweep

Sylvester – Playing in a game environment for the first time this season, the Tift County Lady Devils soccer squad didn’t take long to get into the groove. Facing the Lady Rams at Milt Miller field in Worth County, the Lady Devils dominated the 55:00 contest before ending the game in a mercy rule.

Senior Captain Blakeley Bergeron would strike for 5 goals. She had help from Anna Katherine Choate with her 2 goals, and Sarah Alberson, Nikki Vellidis, and Claire Kimbrell each fired one apiece through the net.

With some changes on the sidelines and players missing for the scrimmage, Coach Doug Head had to be pleased with the victory. He was quick to remind his team there was still much to work as region contests will be coming up quickly.

Assistant coach Jamie Branson decided she needed more time with her newborn baby, and instead Kendall Couch, Tift Alumni and soccer player, will fill that void. Couch is a Spanish teacher at TCHS, and has been helping Emily Head with the middle school program. Couch was the leading scorer during her tenure at TCHS, and played soccer in college.

Missing Taylor McDonald for the year with an torn ACL. Sloane Fletcher was out sick and missing from the lineup. Cassidy Ingram saw limited play as she recovers from another knee injury. Goalie Emily Coleman is still recovering from her knee surgery but is expected to play some this season.

In the night cap, Bobby Earls got a 6-1 win with his squad. Earls said before the contest he was missing a few pieces of his puzzle but hoped to be healthy in time for their first contest Tues. Juan De Santiago, Richie Hernandez, David Martinez all scored in the contest, according to unofficial results.

Tift will host their first contest of the season against Cairo at the TCHS mini stadium on Tuesday evening. Game time is set for 6:00PM.
