Lady Rebels defeat Clinch

Coming into Saturday night’s region championship game against Clinch County, Turner County Lady Rebel head coach Tasha Kimble knew what was at stake. Not only was a region championship on the line, but she also knew home court advantage for the first two round of the state tournament. Win Saturday and her squad wouldn’t have to leave Ashburn until the semifinals. Lose Saturday and her team would be at the mercy of the power rankings. Luckily for the host Lady Rebels, they won and will host a first round game this weekend after winning the 2-A region championship 47-34 over the Lady Panthers of Clinch County (15-8 overall)It was the third meeting of the season between the two squads and while both were fairly close, the Lady Rebels were able to come out victorious. In this game, the Lady Rebels held a slim 22-17 lead at halftime. A decisive third quarter in which the Lady Rebels really came out hot made all the difference. They outscored the Lady Panthers 19-11 in the third quarter to build on their lead and never look back. The Lady Panthers tried to make a run early in the fourth but the deficit was just too big.

Mylashia Yancey, who is averaging almost 20 points per game, finished with a game high 17 points.

The win capped an undefeated season in region play for the Lady Rebels as the improved to 25-2 overall and are currently riding an 11 game winning streak. With the win they should have a top two seed in the playoffs. They were ranked third in the previous power rankings, but the team ranked directly in front of them, Claxton, lost in their region tournament. Clinch County was recently ranked 9th so they are safely in also.

The power rankings will be finalized by the GHSA Tuesday. First round play across the state in Class A will begin next weekend.
