Rebels take Region by 4

Ashburn -You knew that with Ashburn and Ocilla being separated by less than 30 miles, it would be an intense atmosphere for Saturdaynight’s clash in Ashburn for the Region 2-A championship. And the atmosphere was certainly intense with the up and coming Indians trying to knock off the favored Rebels. The two teams had met twice in the regular season with the Rebels winning both times. And in this game, the Indians gave the host Rebels all they wanted. But in the end, the Rebels were just too strong and won 55-51 to win the region championship.

The Rebels did jump out to a big lead as they fed off the energy of the crowd to build a significant 32-16 lead at halftime. But the Indians didn’t give up and kept hanging around and after three quarters, they had cut the deficit to ten. Even in the fourth quarter, they kept slowly trimming the deficit further down. But in the end, the Rebels just had a little too much depth and firepower.

Tamarrion Terry, Shaquille Baldwin, and Quan Hillmon all finished with 13 points each. Terry was also a force on the glass as he finished with 17 rebounds.

Both teams now wait to see where they finish in the GHSA Class A power rankings, which will be finalized on Tuesday. Turner County should have one of the top 5 seeds as they were ranked 5th in this week’s power rankings. Irwin County is in wait and see mode. They came in ranked 17th but they have notched two wins this week to help their cause. The top 16 teams in the final rankings advance to the state tournament which will begin next weekend.
