Tift Soccer Nets Sweep, 2-0 in Region

Valdosta – Doug Head might be running a sports injury rehab clinic before this season ends, but his Tift County Lady Devils squad dispatched the Valdosta Lady Wildcats tonight 6-1 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Titletown. In the Nightcap, Tift’s boys shut out the cats for a 4-0 victory and improved to 2-0 region play.

To say the Tift girls program has seen it’s share of injuries this season would be an understatement. In the preseason, senior forward/stryker Taylor McDonald tore her ACL, ending her season. Soccer is still in her future, as she will be a Fillie at ABAC in the fall. Cassidy Ingram, a valued defender with strong ball control and aggressive skills, has struggled with knee issues and is playing at roughly 80 to 90% as she works to get well. Abby Kay Choate hopes for good news tomorrow as she visits with her doctor about the back injury that has sidelined her for several games. Sloane Fletcher will have knee surgery tomorrow morning, effectively ending her season.  Before the game with the Lady Cats ended, Head would have to add another name to the 60+ day disabled list.

The Lady Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half, powered by Blakely Bergeron’s two goals, and a great unassisted corner kick for a score by Sarah Alberson. Freshman Ashlee Golden also found the net for her second score of her varsity career in the first half.

After the break, Valdosta came out playing a lot more aggressive, finding the net for their sole score on a chip shot in traffic as Coach Head played different players in positions outside their normal zones. Senior Emily Coleman kept the Lady Cats at bay the remainder of the contest.

Sarah Alberson got an assist as her corner kick was tapped home by Bergeron with 15:00 minutes left in the contest. Marianne Walker got the final score on a penalty kick after being fouled hard in the goal box. Tragedy struck for Golden. Fans, coaches and players alike could hear the audible pop that later was confirmed to be a fractured clavicle for the freshman. Golden runs cross country, swims for the high school, and plays mid for the soccer team. The SGSN staff hopes for a pain-free, speedy recovery.

In the nightcap, Bobby Earls got three goals from his men in a first half attack. Damion Terrazas found the net twice, hitting high percentages as he made two of three attempted shots. Senior James Ni struck for a score as well, and reserve David Martinez hit for the fourth goal.  Valdosta was unable to score, but made runs on the Tift defense.

There is a bit of good news for the banged up squad. Tift won’t play again until facing Lowndes in Valdosta a week from today. Game time for the girl’s contest is set from 6PM, with the guys to follow.
