Durden, along with Worth senior Lindsey Toneygay, missed the scrimmage as they participated in the World Series in California this week. Tift senior Katelyn Hancock would start on the rubber, while Hathcock sent veteran sophomore Caroline Newton for Worth.

*Scoreless through three frames, Tift Freshman shortstop Ragen Lasseter took Taylor Layfield’s rise ball yard, finding the center field fence an easy hurdle. Her solo shot would break the ice. In the bottom half of the inning, Newton reached on an error, and would later score as a pitching infraction was called on Hancock.

Tied again, Tift would plate another run in the top of the 5th. Kaitlyn Tucker would reach on a fielding error, and after Leslie Bailey struck out, move to second on another fielding miscue by the Lady Rams. Tift coach Taylor Wilkins gave the sign to his right fielder, sophomore Hannah Hartsfield, and she laid down a great bunt down the first base line. Tucker would score in a bang bang play at the plate.

While Worth made some position changes in the 5th frame, Hancock would return to the rubber for the Lady Devils. Down 2-1, the Lady Rams got a leadoff double from Kara Lewis. relief Pitcher Taylor Layfield would draw a walk from Hancock, and the pair would score as McKenzie Newell hit the ball hard to left field for the RBI double. Newell would plate the insurance run off a Brinsley Graddy single for the win, 4-2.

Newton gave up no earned runs in 4 innings of work, and struck out 6. Layfield would pocket the win in relief. Hancock struck out five in the six frames of work, allowing 4 runs in her effort. Played as a preseason exhibition, both teams look ahead to the start of the regular season. Tift will host Camden County on Saturday in a double header at the Devil Diamond. Game times are 12 and 2PM. Worth will travel to the Lady Packers of Colquitt County on Thursday. Game time for that matchup is 5PM at Packer Park.

*Note: originally the Homerun by Lasseter was charged (via GameChanger stats) to Caroline Newton. We reported the stats as reported to us. The solo shot was charged to Taylor Layfield. Layfield amassed both runs.
