Irwin Dominates Berrien

Friday night, August 28, non-conference rivals Berrien Rebels and the Irwin Indians went head to head. After coming out of great season last year the Indians took the field ready to show out for another great season, defeating the Rebels 32-14.
Berrien started the game off by returning the kickoff down to the 42 yard line but couldn’t move the ball down field to score. A punt would put Irwin on the 32. There was no stopping the Indians once they started moving down field. A pass play to Indians, Ty Hogan would move the Indians down to the 48 for a first down. Indians Dj Pollard broke through a crowd of rebels for 38 yard run to the end zone putting the Indians up 6-0. A perfect kick from Austin Pettis would put the Indians up 7-0 with seven minutes left in the first quarter. 
Berrien needed to fight back hard to get to the end zone. Berrien’s, Devyne Lindsey, pressured his way through two Indians for the first down and a flag on the Indians would put the rebels at the 30. A pass from quarterback Blake Guthrie to Lindsey, would put the rebels at the 11 yard line with a first down. The Indians defense put the pressure on the Rebels holding them at the 11.

 Hogan started the movement down field with a nine yard rush to the 42. Pollard pushed his way forward through the Rebel defense for the first down. The Rebel defense struggled to stop Pollard as he continued to find openings and move down field again but brought down at the 15. Irwin rushed again and was brought down at the 4 yard line. As Pollard muscled his way through the Berrien defense once again for a touchdown. The Indians were up 14-0 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

Berrien needed to move quick if they wanted to put points on the board. A rush from the 16 to the 44 put the Rebels in a good position in hopes of maneuvering their way to the end zone. A quarterback keeper play from Guthrie put the ball on the 43 for a first down. After three attempts at trying to move the ball Guthrie rushed again but fell short of the first down turning the ball over to the Indians at the 20 yard line. Berrien’s defense put the pressure on the Indians continuing to push them back and lose yardage. Rebels, Caleb Rowland, made the difference with a huge sack and a loss of 15 yards for the Indians forcing them to punt.  

With less than two minutes left in the first half the rebels pushed towards the goal line in order to put points on the board unfortunately they fell short and Irwin lead the first half 14-0 against the Berrien Rebels.

Irwin came out of the half ready to win muscling their way through the Berrien defense yet again. A carry by Andrews would put the Indians up by 20 after a failed attempt at a two point conversion. 
The Rebels took the field ready to score and a pass to Rowland would move Berrien down field to the 29. Berrien continued to push through the Indians defense in hopes of recovering from a bad first half. Guthrie forced his way through the Indians line for a touchdown along with a good kick by Ransom Trueman would put the rebels on the board 7-20.
Irwin wasn’t shook up quickly moving the ball to the 36, but Berrien held down their line forcing the Indians to turn over on downs. Berrien tried to move the ball down field but lost control and fumbled. The ball was recovered by the Indians at the 40. The Indians moved the ball down towards the end zone and a pass to Pollard would put them up 26-7 with three seconds left in the third.

Berrien returned the punt to their 27. Powering forward Berrien made their way down to their 9 yard line. A pass to Rowland from Guthrie for a touchdown would leave the rebels only down by 12 with five minutes left in the game.

The Indians answered back quickly with a 95 yard return by Cartavion Benyard would put another touchdown on the board and a bigger lead 32-14 with less than five minutes left in the game. The Rebel offense fought hard to get to the end zone but the Indians defense stood strong and took home the win 32-14 against the Rebels.
 

 

The Berrien Rebels will head back home to face off against the Cook Hornets next Friday, September 4th, while the Irwin Indians will host Fitzgerald.
