Tiftarea falls 21-14

Chula, GA- The Tiftarea Panthers faced off against their rivals the Pinewood Christian Academy Patriots on Friday night. The Panther fans were decked out in their most patriotic attire to commemorate 9/11, this being paired with playing against their rivals led to a lot of enthusiasm and bell ringing.

The game was a close one where when one team scored the other was not far behind. Pinewood would find the scoreboard first, using a short field and 5 plays to go 26 yards for the score. Jeffrey Young scored from 13 yards out. Tiftarea would struggle to respond early, going 3 and out, but getting a good defensive stand to stop Pinewood on fourth down.  The Panther offense would have to punt on their next possession and the Patriots took advantage.  Marching again down a short field, the Patriots would cap another 29-yard drive with Mr. Young, this time from eight yards out.

Coach Tully Payne’s offense came to life after the kick, as Spence Massey found Mondo West for a 51-yard touchdown pass. McKinley Morehead added the point after, and the Panthers were within 7.

In the second period, Tiftarea’s fans were incredibly enthusiastic with their cowbells and bottles filled with metal beads. The Panther defense forced another 3 and out for the Patriots, and Tiftarea wasted no time finding the endzone again. Payne called Malik Johnson’s number, and the transfer running back responded with a 65-yard run for the TD.  Neither team could make anything else happen, and halftime came knotted up at 14.

In the 3rd Quarter, the wheels fell off the bus for Pinewood. Marching on a 55-yard drive that started at their own 20-yard line, Young threw the first of two interceptions on the evening.  Tiftarea couldn’t take advantage, and after a three and out, Pinewood began anew at their own 48. Using 5:56 minutes of precious clock, the Patriots went 52-yards on 11 plays to score the final touchdown of the night. Running back Preston Campbell scurried in from nine yards out for the score, and the contest would end that way.

Tiftarea struggled to move the ball in the second half, punting twice and then failing to convert as time scaled down.  With a final shot to tie with 2:28 to play, Massey was picked off.
Tiftarea amassed 147 yards in total offense, 74 on the ground, with Massey completing 5 of 14 passing for 79 yards. Johnson finished with 67 yards rushing, the bulk of that on the TD run in the second frame.
Pinewood would garner 218 yards in offense, 54 through the air, and 164 on the turf. Campbell would lead the way with 99 yards, and Young adding 56 yards on 20 carries.
The Panthers move to 2-2 on the year, and travel to Hahira for a contest with Valwood next Friday night. Game time is 7:30PM.
