Tift 5-0, tames Alcovy 52-0

Tifton- Tift County won its 2015 homecoming game with a 52-0 beating of Alcovy High School. It was the Devils’ second consecutive 52-0 win and moved Tift to 5-0 with a combined score of 237-13. The Devils are off next week before going to Lee County for its first road game and its first region matchup.

Alcovy is a 6-A school like Tift County, but that’s where the similarities end. The two football programs could not be further apart. The loss was Alcovy’s 16th consecutive defeat while Tift continues to trend upwards. After five years without a winning record, the Devils made the playoffs last year, and first-year head coach Ashley Anders’ team is now poised to make another run at the post season.

Senior running back Barry Bennett kept up his personal scoring onslaught. The 1-AAAAAA scoring leader scored the first two touchdowns of the game on a 50-yard screen pass from Griffin Collier and on a 6- yard run that made the score 14-0 with 9:15 left in the first quarter. His second TD followed a botched punt snap by the Tigers. Bennett added a 2-yard touchdown run late in the half giving him an incredible 84 points in five games.

Wendell White had two interceptions on consecutive Alcovy possessions in the first quarter. He returned the first one for a 31-yard touchdown that put Tift up 21-0. His second interception was followed by an episode of the Rodrick Gaines’ Show. Gaines carried on all five Tift snaps on a 5-play, 66- yard scoring drive. On all five carries, Gaines drew gasps from the crowd as he ran over multiple Alcovy defenders. The score came from two yards out.

Collier connected with fellow sophomore Rashod Bateman on two touchdown passes. The first was from nine yards out and made the score 35-0 early in the second quarter. On the next Tift possession, Bateman caught a 6-yard TD from Collier making the score 42-0 at the half. Collier was 9 of 14 passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions for 131 yards.

Sophomore place kicker Marc Renner put the final points on the rout making a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. It took the two teams just 27 minutes to play two 12-minute quarters under the running clock in the second half.

As a team, Tift ran the ball 20 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns. The Devils threw the ball for another 150 giving Tift 290 yards of total offense. Alcovy had 30 yards total offense and never crossed into Tift territory. The Tigers ran the ball 23 times for negative 26 yards and passed for 56 yards and two interceptions.
