Fitzgerald blows Over Putnam 51-15

In the first round of the playoffs, the Fitzgerald  Hurricanes went head to head against the Putnam County Eagles at Jaycee Stadium. The Canes defeated the Eagles Friday, November 13, 51 to 15.

The Eagles, Deon Hill, started strong with a return to their own 25. Quarterback, Tyrone Davis, took advantage of an open field on the first play with a 75 yard rush on the quarterback keeper to the end zone. The Eagles took the lead 6 to 0 and a complete pass for the two point conversion put them up 8-0.

with carries from Montrell Harris and JD King. A 24 yard pass to King put the Canes on the board 7-8. A determined Fitzgerald defense held the Eagles from scoring and with less than two minutes left in the game the Canes moved the ball to the 20. After not being able to get the first down the canes attempted a field goal that went wide left leaving the score at 7-8 with nine seconds left in the first quarter.

The Eagles took over at the 20 but couldn’t hang on to the ball causing a fumble and was recovered at the five by Fitzgerald. A pass to King from quarterback James Graham put the canes up 13-8 at the start of the second.

Unable to run through the Fitzgerald defense, Putnam tried to change their strategy. A pass from Davis fell short and was picked by Fitzgerald’s Willie Ross at the 23. Harris continued to move the ball down to the 10 for the Canes, where kicker, Raul Martinez, put up three for the Canes. Fitzgerald now had the lead 17-8.

Struggling to push past the Fitzgerald defense once again, the Eagles trying to push down field and a long pass from Davis was picked by Fitzgerald Ross at the 35. A pass to tight end Lecitus Smith, put the Canes at the 21 for first down. A quarterback keeper from Graham put another touchdown on the board for Fitzgerald with a lead of 30 to 8 against the Eagles at the end of the first half.

There was no stopping Fitzgerald in the second half, returning the kickoff to the 19. Carries from King

and others pushed the Canes down to the 5 where a complete pass to King for a touchdown put another 7 point on the board for Fitzgerald now leaving 37 to 8 with 9 minutes left in the 3rd.
Putnam moved the ball down to the 45 where Ross was there to get the pick again for Fitzgerald. A carry from the Canes would put another touchdown on the board. The Canes led 44-8 with 2 minutes left in the third.

After a fumble from Putnam recovered by Fitzgerald at the end of the third, the Canes took the ball at the 40. Carries from Damien Devine and Talvin Craddock move the ball down to the 5 where a carry from number Devine would be ran in for a touchdown for Fitzgerald continuing to hold their lead 51-8. In an attempt to score again Putnam fought hard with carries from Trevor Ellison and Torrence Calhoun, the Eagles moved the ball to the 40. A carry from number Ellison ran the ball in for a touchdown. The Canes defeated the Eagles with a final score of 51-15.

In a Sad Final note. Long Tome Canes play by play announcer Tim Raynor was honored tonight during his retirement ceremony.

This was possibly his final home game ending a 25 year run as the Canes Announcer and was appreciated by fans and co workers tonight.
